Biography

Former MIT professor Dr. Barry Blesser is recognized for his contributions to a wide variety of professional disciplines, including audio signal processing, auditory perception, pattern recognition, aural architecture, career development and engineering management. He is a globally recognized authority on audio technology, both as an inventor and an expert witness. Over the last 40 years, he has provided technical and management consulting services to more than 50 high-technology companies.

As one of the leading pioneers of digitized audio in the 1970s, Blesser developed the first commercial digital reverb for EMT, organized the first AES conference on digital signal processing and helped found Lexicon. He was the principal engineer of Orban’s Audicy workstation, which was designed explicitly for the radio industry.

Presently, Blesser is Director of Engineering for 25-Seven Systems, which specializes in time management of audio program material. For the past several years he has written a regular column for Radio World Engineering Extra. Blesser is a past president of the Audio Engineering Society, a consulting technical editor of its journal and a recipient of its Silver, Governors and Publication medals. MIT Press recently published his book Spaces Speak, Are You Listening? Experiencing Aural Architecture. During the last 3 years, Blesser has delivered more than a dozen keynote lectures on sound in space. He recently published a paper, “Technical Properties of Arbitron’s PPM System.”
